A Reason to Study is the fourteenth chapter of the Oushitsu Kyoushi Heinemanga.

Plot[]

Heine gives Leonhard back his graded quizzes, all of which have very low marks. Leonhard was in denial at first since he had worked hard. He even trying to burn the test, thinking Heine used an invisible ink to hide his "real score". Heine tries to cheer him up by saying that he had improved since the first test, since he now mastered the basics. Leonhard decides that the basics is all he needs to know and runs off, refusing to ever study again. While trying to find him, Heine bumps into Licht, who suggests that he should wait for him at lunch instead of chasing after him. Leonhard shows up as planned, and look around for Heine. After he's confident that there's no Heine, he happily eat his lunch. After he finished, Heine suddenly comes from behind and forcefully drags him out the room.

Leonhard is still refusing to study and Heine reminds him of his promise to his faster. He claims to only said that to make his father happy but he still hates studying. He wants a good reason why he should study, prompting Heine to tell him that he should study because his elders told him to and that it's all for his own good. Hearing that makes Leonhard reminded of his traumatic experience with his old royal tutors. Heine then quickly retracts it and saying it would be the simplest answer anyone would say. Truthfully, he doesn't know the 100 percent correct reason why he should study because everyone have different reasons to study. He also mentions that he himself only studied because it was the only way for him to survive.

He asked Leonhard if he got a dream, and Leonhard answered that he wants to be a king. Heine tells him that king needs to be knowledgeable but Leonhard replies that a king doesn't need to study. Heine asked him if his father is a "fool", Leonhard angrily replies that his father is a perfect king, heroic and everyone (even foreigners) respects him. Heine also adds that his father speaks with diplomats of foreign nation in their own language without using an interpreter to gain their confidence. Leonhard then freezes in realization. Without any knowledge, a king wouldn't able to shape the kingdom's future and language skill is needed to boost further the kingdom's political power, and all of his achievement is the fruit of all his hard work. Heine then ask him if he still thinks studying is pointless and convince him that even if he fails to be a king, the knowledge he gain will be useful in many other ways.

However, Leonhard is still hesitant because of his bad grades, but Heine tells him that his grades are not indicative of his future. He also tells him that he shouldn't expect to suddenly get good grades after years of not working hard. Heine then bluntly tells him that someone like him on the throne would probably be sent to the guillotine, scaring Leonhard. Infuriated Leonhard decides to study hard and become a great king to prove him wrong. Heine silently thinks that he'll be waiting for that day to come. But few days later, Heine returned his recent test, still having bad grades.
