Determined in the Present is the thirty-fourth chapter of the Oushitsu Kyoushi Heine manga.

Summary[]

Kai tells Heine that he wants to go back to military school, since the real story about what happened there was publicized. He also told Bruno and his father about his wish, and while Bruno has no wish to go back, Viktor wants to send Kai to another military school, since he didn't want him to get hurt again. However, Kai feels that it's right to go back to the same school. Not knowing what to do, he asks Heine what to do. He tells him that he'll have to persuade his father by giving him a sound reason to go back. He suggests that Kai write a letter, since he's not good with talking. Kai spends the night trying to write the letter, while worrying about how his father would react.

The next day, Heine accompanies him to Viktor's office to deliver the letter, but Kai tries to back out because he's worried that his father will get upset about him disagreeing with him. Heine reminds him that expressing his true opinion is the hallmark of a relationship of mutual trust, and that simply agreeing with whatever he says isn't a part of a trusting relationship at all. Kai decides to tell his father his true feelings, wanting to trust that he'll accept them. He restates to him that he wants to go back to school despite his objections, and even though Viktor worries about the people may not be as nice as the palace staff being at the school, he believes that it's important that he learn to speak with them too, in order to become a worthy candidate for the throne. He also mentions that he likes the lessons he learned there. He then tells Viktor that he wrote all of that in his letter, surprising both Heine and Viktor. Heine tells him that he had just delivered the contents of his letter, causing Kai to panic. Viktor laughs, apologizes for being a worrywart, says that he has forgotten how much Kai had grown since then, and thanks him for reminding him. He agrees to let Kai go back to military school, since he believes that he will be fine.

Later, Kai sets off for the first day of school, with both Heine and Viktor fussing over him; Viktor telling the guards to guard him closely, and Heine asking him if he had forgotten anything. Kai then leaves for the school, with Heine remarking that children grow up fast, and that adults must grow up with them as well. Viktor agrees, and teases Heine that he doesn't seem to ever grow taller, annoying him.
